3 Best Careers for Medical Job Security

Ever wondered which medical professions offer the best job security? If you’ve always wanted to work in the medical field, but still haven’t decided which job’s right for you, here are the 3 best careers for medical job security:

1. Physician

There is an ever-increasing demand for physicians across the country, with estimates from the Bureau of Labor statistics suggesting that 123,300 new jobs will be created by 2022. With a median salary of $186,850 in 2013, becoming a physician can be a lucrative career, but one that will take several years of training. Most physicians start off by taking a major in a science-related subject like chemistry or biology before specializing in medicine. They will need a good score on the MCAT and an outstanding academic transcript. They can then specialize, before embarking on up to eight more years of training. This is likely the best option for medical job security as well as salary, but will take the most training and education.

2. Dentist

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 23,300 dentists are needed by the year 2022 – making this a job with plenty of opportunity and job security. Those who are interested in this career can major in chemistry, math, biology, or a related subject, and will need to take the Dental Admission Test. But that’s not all – students will need letters of recommendation and a full college transcript to be admitted to a dental school program. However, there’s a great deal of flexibility once prospective dentists get to this level; they can choose from various specialties and work in a residency program after they have graduated. Although their salary will depend on various factors, a dentist can expect to earn a median salary of around $146,000, and there’s potential to open their own practices in the future. Because this career has flexible employment options, it could have slightly varied degrees of medical job security.

3. Nurse Practitioner

Like dentists, there’s great demand for nurse practitioners throughout the country, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimating that 37,100 new jobs will be created by 2022. The average salary in 2013 was $96,670, making this a well-paid job, as well as one that offers a good deal of work/life balance. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners estimated that there were nearly 916 million visits with nurse practitioners last year alone – a job that has a wide range of responsibilities, including the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions. To embark on this career, an individual will need to become a registered nurse by holding a bachelor’s degree before passing the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX. They will need to complete two to four more years of study before earning a nurse practitioner degree. Further training is required still, as prospective nurse practitioners will need to obtain a license for the state in which they want to work. Because this position requires extensive training in a variety of areas, a nurse practitioner may have the qualifications for other medical positions as well. This is an additional aspect that may increase your medical job security.
